Evaluation Challenges for Computer-Aided Diagnostic Characterization: Shape Disagreements in the Lung Image Database Consortium Pulmonary Nodule Dataset

چکیده
Evaluating the success of computer-aided decision support systems depends upon a reliable reference standard, a ground truth. The ideal gold standard is expected to result from the marking, labeling, and rating by domain experts of the image of interest. However experts often disagree, and this lack of agreement challenges the development and evaluation of image-based feature prediction of expert-defined “truth.” The following discussion addresses the success and limitation of developing computer-aided models to characterize suspicious pulmonary nodules based upon ratings provided by multiple expert radiologists. These prediction models attempt to bridge the semantic gap between images and medicallymeaningful, descriptive opinions about visual characteristics of nodules. The resultant computer-aided diagnostic characterizations (CADc) are directly usable for indexing and retrieving in content-based medical image retrieval and supporting computer-aided diagnosis. The predictive performance of CADc models are directly related to the extent of agreement between radiologists; the models better predict radiologists’ opinions when radiologists agree more with each other about the characteristics of nodules. متن کاملA Computer-Aided Diagnosis Framework for Pulmonary Nodule Interpretation in Thoracic Computed Tomography
Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems can assist radiologists in several diagnostic tasks. In this paper, we present a CAD framework which assist radiologists in interpreting pulmonary nodule in computed tomography (CT). Our approach can be considered as an approach to bridge the semantic gap between computed image features and nodule characteristics normally used by radiologists to diagnose l...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Different Query Sets on Expanded Diagnosed Dataset Using Content Based Image Retrieval in the Detection of Lung Nodules for Lung Cancer Diagnosis
In lung cancer computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems, having an accurate ground truth is critical and time consuming. In this study, we have explored Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC) database containing pulmonary computed tomography (CT) scans, and we developed contentbased image retrieval (CBIR) approach to exploit the limited amount of diagnostically labeled data in order to annotate un...
متن کاملA New Computer-Aided Detection System for Pulmonary Nodule in CT Scan Images of Cancerous Patients
Introduction: In the lung cancers, a computer-aided detection system that is capable of detecting very small glands in high volume of CT images is very useful. This study provided a novelsystem for detection of pulmonary nodules in CT image. Methods: In a case-control study, CT scans of the chest of 20 patients referred to Yazd Social Security Hospital were examined. In the two-dimensional and ...
متن کاملArtificial Neural Network based Classification of Lungs Nodule using Hybrid Features from Computerized Tomographic Images
An automated pulmonary nodule detection system is necessary to help radiologist to identify and detect the nodules at early stage. In this paper, a novel pulmonary nodule detection system is proposed using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) based on hybrid features consist of 2D and 3D Geometric and Intensity based statistical features. The lung volume is segmented using thresholding, 3D connecte...
